On 19 January, Staay Food Group acquired the rights to a new variety of red Conference pears, making the company the sole party entitled to bring this pear to the Dutch market. The rights to market this pear on the Belgian market were acquired by the Belgian Fruit Auction (BVF). The two parties jointly share the right to market this pear in the rest of the world.
The red Conference pear was discovered just over two years ago as a red mutant of the regular Conference pear. Since then, extensive tests were conducted on the new, tasty-looking pear. In the next few years to come, a limited number of trees will be planted in the Netherlands and Belgium, during which period further research will be conducted on the new pear’s cultivation and storage properties. The trees will be available for commercial applications in three years’ time and the first harvest will be brought to the market one year after. The scope of the commercialisation is expected to increase at a rapid pace in the following years.
The red pear comprises a unique complement to the product range offered by Staay Food Group and its hard fruit specialist Frupaks-Vernooij, which already contains an extensive variety of both soft and hard fruits.
